چکیده

This paper describes INVENT, a system for selecting ventilator setting based on physiological models and penalty functions. The models and penalty functions included in INVENT are first described followed by an example of the use of the system in selecting ventilator settings for a patient residing in the intensive care unit. For this patient, the advice given by the system is shown to be reasonable and consistent with clinical opinion.

The Intelligent Ventilator (INVENT) project: The role of mathematical models in translating physiological knowledge into clinical practice

This dissertation has addressed the broad hypothesis as to whether building mathematical models is useful as a tool for translating physiological knowledge into clinical practice. In doing so it describes work on the INtelligent VENTilator project (INVENT), the goal of which is to build, evaluate and integrate into clinical practice, a model-based decision support system for control of mechanic...

The Integration of Multi-Factor Model of Capital Asset Pricing and Penalty Function for Stock Return Evaluation

One of the main concerns of investors is the evaluation of the return on investment, which is conducted using various models such as the CAPM (single-factor model), Fama-French three/five-factor models, and Roy and Shijin’s six-factor model and other models known as multi-factor models. Despite the widespread use of these models, their major drawbacks include sensitivity to unexpected changes, ...

Single Facility Goal Location Problems with Symmetric and Asymmetric Penalty Functions

Location theory is an interstice field of optimization and operations research‎. ‎In the classic location models‎, ‎the goal is finding the location of one or more facilities such that some criteria such as transportation cost‎, ‎the sum of distances passed by clients‎, ‎total service time, and cost of servicing are minimized‎. ‎The goal Weber location problem is a special case of location mode...

THE EFFECTS OF INITIAL SAMPLING AND PENALTY FUNCTIONS IN OPTIMAL DESIGN OF TRUSSES USING METAHEURISTIC ALGORITHMS

Although Genetic algorithm (GA), Ant colony (AC) and Particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) have already been extended to various types of engineering problems, the effects of initial sampling beside constraints in the efficiency of algorithms, is still an interesting field. In this paper we show that, initial sampling with a special series of constraints play an important role in the conv...

Human versus Computer Controlled Selection of Ventilator Settings: An Evaluation of Adaptive Support Ventilation and Mid-Frequency Ventilation

Background. There are modes of mechanical ventilation that can select ventilator settings with computer controlled algorithms (targeting schemes). Two examples are adaptive support ventilation (ASV) and mid-frequency ventilation (MFV). We studied how different clinician-chosen ventilator settings are from these computer algorithms under different scenarios. Methods. A survey of critical care cl...
